On the 29th of August 2004 accompanied by Norman Blackburn (from Kids can Fly) and Ben Hunwicks part of The A300 sim crew, we left Glasgow for the Vatsim convention in Sydney and a chance to get together with the guys from the Australian World Flight team.

Yes you guessed it full headgear was required before drinking from the Quaich

The 1st stage of our flight was by Emirates A330-200 From Glasgow to Dubai. The aicraft arrived on stand after some normal Scottish weather but departed on time

Making our way to Dubai passing Iraq

Matt has built a 747-400 simulator that both Norman (A340 sim builder) and I found simply increadible. We were fortunate to be able to spend a couple of days at the sim, although now I think a smoke hood might have been a good idea

Almost there Sydney in sight at last

Just when you thought it was safe to go flying, an engine fire after take off.

Would you go flying with this man ?

Alex made sure we had great view of the Sydney area and a day to remember.

The Vatsim convention was over 3 days, an informal night on the Friday followed by a series of presentations on the Saturday with a formal meal in the evening . The convention finished on the Sunday out at Matt Sheil 747-400 sim

I took with me to the conference a Quaich which is a Scottish drinking cup usually filled with whiskey and used when friends meet or leave which for me captures the camaraderie of Vatsim and especially Vatpac.

An order for Tartan headgear quickly followed, now standard dress for the Australian World Flight Team and of course always worn when drinking from the Quaich

At the conference there was a presentation on non precision approaches by  Brent McColl

From the virtual world to real world air accident investigation with Mike  Watson

I try to explain to Terry Scanlan the purpose of the Quaich, but the best was yet to come

Matt Sim God Sheil savours the moment

On the Sunday a great day was had at Matt’s place and wouldn’t have been complete without a barbie

Some of the Vatpac staff that ensured that the 2004 conference was a weekend to remember.
